The Deep Blue
Summertime. For many of us, this conjures up images of sun, sand and the the deep blue ocean. Today, more than half of the US population lives within 50 miles of a coast and that number continues to grow. Coastal areas have a magnetic draw on us. We plan day-trips and entire vacations around ocean activities – swimming, surfing, boating, fishing and pure relaxation. But the ocean also provides us with essential things like food, oxygen and medicines, and is home to hundreds of thousands of sea creatures. It’s what connects us to people all over the globe and is an integral part of our lives.
Because the ocean gives us so much, it’s essential that we take care of it. Not only is it the right thing to do for the creatures that live there, but it’s important for our own health and safety as well as the health and safety of future generations.
That’s why, every year on June 8th, we celebrate World Oceans Day. Since 1992, World Oceans Day has been a day to celebrate our oceans and take action to protect them. Each year, people from all over the world organize events and celebrations in their communities to raise awareness about beloved blue oceans. This year’s theme - healthy oceans, healthy planet – encourages all of us to think about the little things we can do every day to eliminate plastic pollution and make a difference.
If you’re already a fan of LunchSkins, you know that reducing plastic waste through small efforts is the heart of what we do here at 3greenmoms. Since we began, we’ve partnered with many schools, stores, non-profits and families far and wide to replace one billion plastic bags – and prevent them from ending up in landfills and waterways.
Today, we are proud to be working with some very special partners to celebrate World Oceans Day. Our mission partner, 5 Gyres Institute, just launched a new expedition in the Atlantic – ‘I SEA Change’ – with fellow ocean hero, song-writer and surfer, Jack Johnson. The goal of their journey is to study the impact and health hazards of single use plastics on our World’s ocean as they sail from the US to the Bahamas to Bermuda. To support their work and dedication to eliminating plastic pollution, we supplied the crew and families with LunchSkins to practice zero waste living aboard the ship. For more information about the 5 Gyres and their I SEA Change expedition check out 5gyres.org.
To further support 5 Gyres throughout the year, we’ve designed a limited edition Seabird bag. While it may look like a typical LunchSkin sandwich bag, this one packs an even more powerful punch against plastic pollution. When you purchase the Seabird bag, 10% of the proceeds will go to the 5 Gyres Institute to support and promote their efforts to see a planet free of plastic pollution.
We hope you join us in our celebration of World Oceans Day by supporting the 5 Gyres Institute through the purchase of our Seabird Bag. To purchase your Seabird Bag click here. For other ways you can get involved or to find events near you, visit worldoceansday.org.
